Understanding Trauma & Recovery
The Work: When you have experienced trauma (no matter when during your life), the past has a cruel way of coming back up in your present. It can leave you feeling stuck in a constant state of survival mode, where old memories and triggers keep you on high alert. We aren’t going to go back and erase the trauma, and we will explore that story enough to reduce the intrusive memories and triggers. This will help you open a window to a clearer, brighter future and leave the hurtful trauma in the past where it belongs.
How it works: In our work together, I use treatment protocols that are designed to safely process these difficult experiences. This includes Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), which helps you piece together the timeline of your life. Then there will be Prolonged Exposure (PE) to help your brain gently unlearn the intense fear responses connected to your past. When it is important to help you through this safely, I will give you skills to help you tolerate the distress. This kind of work is so very hard, and as you know, absolutely necessary.
My job is to make sure we move at a pace that keeps you feeling completely safe, supported, and grounded every single step of the way.
