Tweens, Teens, and Parents -- SYSTEMS:
Clinical Philosophy: Every family develops its own homeostasis—a way of being together that keeps things stable, even if that stability is painful. My job is to disrupt that old pattern, navigate the "discombobulated" phase, and help establish a new normal where everyone functions better.
The "Insurance" Talk: I de-pathologize the identified patient. I explain that the "diagnosis" and "patient label" are just about the insurance stuff and don't define the child. The focus is on the system, not a broken individual.
Communication Boundary: Parents, you own the privilege to know what we are discussing, and for this to work, I need you to hear it from them, not from me. This fosters direct communication and bridges the gap between parent and child.
My job is to educate parents on how to set firm boundaries, reinforce positive behaviors, and strategically decrease unwanted behaviors to build a healthier, better-functioning family system.
